The Cottage
One cloudy afternoon a month or so ago I decided to have lunch at The Cottage. I have seen it at least a hundred times in my life but had never stopped by. Out of curiosity mostly I wanted to see what they were all about. The outside is obviously meant to give you a “homey” feel so I expected to have some good comfort food. When I walked in I noticed several trinkets and things all around the place. It was a little hokey and at the same time slightly cozy. The one thing that really really annoyed me is that they had one of those “Judge/Court” shows on. I despise those…..I also hate when restaurants play them during lunch. I have been known to just walk back out. This day I didn’t. Somehow I drowned it out by playing Angry Birds on my phone.
From the menu I saw that they had the usually meat and two veg type meal so I got the meatloaf with tomato gravy, fried okra, white beans, and a roll. I was a tad bit disappointed with the portions when it came out but I hoped the taste could make up for it…. sadly no. The meatloaf was ok but the tomato gravy was basically the canned stuff. The okra was fine, but the white beans were very very under seasoned. It took some salt and pepper to partially revive those bad boys. Nothing could save the “roll” however. It was the dryest and most tasteless piece of bread I’ve ever eaten. (well I only took two bites.)
After it was finished I was still pretty hungry so I let the waitress talk me into banana pudding and some coffee. I’m glad I did because it was the highlight of my lunch. Whoever made that should lend a hand with the rest of the stuff. I think The Cottage has potential to be great. It certainly does have a cozy feel to it and with some proper cooking they could really make a name for themselves. Perhaps if they only sold breakfast and then banana pudding??….
