Bar-B-Q Shop

If you live in Memphis and are a fan of barbeque (who isn’t) you have most likely eaten at the Bar-B-Q Shop. If not, it’s located on Madison Ave in Midtown. (Parking in the rear.) They have been among the barbeque royalty in Memphis in every review for the past few years.

I’d first read about them in the Memphis Flyer’s barbeque rankings a few years ago. They were actually voted the best barbeque sandwich that year. One of the things that stood out was that they use Texas toast rather than a bun. Pretty different for Memphis.

I finally got to eat there a little while back. I stopped by during a busy busy lunch hour and I got my food to go because I was a little pressed for time. I got the pulled pork sandwich (with slaw of course) with fries and beans. They smell inside was outrageous. Your stomach starts growling instantly when you walk in.

They Texas toast actually worked for me. Having a square sandwich somehow seems to hold more meat. Optical illusion? Could be. Anyway, the pulled pork was absolutely great. So were the beans and fries…. The sauce was the only thing I didn’t really care for. I actually would have preferred to go sans sauce. (Which I never do.) It tasted a little too vinegary to me. It reminded me of that yellow barbeque sauce from the Carolinas.

I am pretty anxious to get back there really really soon and try out some ribs. Then some nachos…..and then some chicken. Anyway, overall I really enjoyed my barbeque. Even though I am not a fan of their sauce I’m sure other’s will find me crazy for not liking it. Just my opinion. Anyway, Bar-B-Q Shop is no doubt a Memphis barbeque institution that will stay among the elite for some time. (And that says a lot in the TRUE Barbeque Capital of the World!!)

  1. I am not incredibly crazy about their sauce either, but that is just coming from a Pretentious-Memphis-BBQ-Eater. BBQ Shop isn’t my all-time favorite in Memphis, but they are definitely up there for sure! I have been meaning to go back for a while.

    • Thanks Shannon! I was afraid of some serious backlash for that. I’m glad you agree on the sauce.

What is your all-time favorite? I want to go the the best BBQ joint in Memphis!

      • I would say Interstate BBQ.
