Bhan Thai

I’ve been hearing about Bhan Thai for sometime now. Literally everything I’ve heard or read has been positive so naturally it was on the top of my “to eat” list this year. This past Saturday seemed like a good night to try it out, so my wife and I decided to go. We arrived at 6pm just before their dinner rush. There was no wait, and we were directed to a table for two in the back corner of the restaurant. Like the other businesses on Peabody, Bhan Thai is in an old house. They have done an excellent job making it feel like a restaurant.

My wife and I had looked the menu up online so we needed no time to place our order. For an appetizer we selected the Appetizer Sampler so that we could sample several things. It comes with Crab Rangoon, Potstickers, Thai Toast, and Egg Rolls. By far, the highlight was the Thai Toast. The menu description describes it as “french toast topped with shrimp and chicken.” All I could say was “WOW.” It was fried to perfection with a perfect texture. It comes with a cucumber salad that is simply outstanding.

For our entrees my wife ordered the Eight Angels. It is a mild dish with sauteed shrimp, chicken, pork, and beef with lots of great vegetables. The sauce that it comes with is very good. Especially when spooned over the furnished white rice.

I chose the Drunken Seafood Combination. It is characterized as “hot” which I assume is hotter than “spicy.” Either way it was just plain dynamite…..and I mean that in the best way possible. It features sauteed shrimp, squid, salmon, and mussels with vegetables in their special hot sauce. I typically skip squid, but this was outstanding. It had a great texture and nowhere near being overdone. The sauce was so good I literally soaked up the residual with my rice and ate it.

Though we were pretty full we still decided we wanted to try their desserts. My wife ordered the Flan over sticky rice with coconut sauce. I ordered their chocolate lava cake with rasberry sauce. Mine was nice, warm, and perfect. I actually don’t eat coconut, but my wife loved her’s. I’ll take her word for it.

Overall we loved our experience at Bhan Thai. I’ve love to go back for lunch sometime soon. Actually, writing this review has made me hungry…. Anyway, please check this place out if you haven’t already. I’m sure you will agree with me, the Commercial Appeal, the Memphis Flyer, and just about everybody else who has tried this great restaurant. Truly the best Thai in town.
