New Asia

This is, by far, my favorite Chinese restaurant in Memphis. This was not always the case. The first time I went I actually had the flu. The only thing I ate was their crab and corn soup. I literally ate the entire toureen. I couldn’t really taste it, but it felt good to my throat.

The next time my wife and I went they handed each of us a different menu. At first, I just thought they were simply two different colors. She started telling me what she wanted and I didn’t see anything she was talking about. It was then that we discovered that they handed me their generic “Americanized” Chinese menu. They handed my wife, who is Asian, their traditional Chinese menu. I have to admit that I was a little upset that they didn’t at least ask us which menu we wanted. Instead they assumed I wouldn’t like the traditional items.

We both ordered from her menu. We got the Salted Fish Fried Rice, an order of their great Crab & Corn Soup, and Shrimp with Spicy Salt. Everything we got was outstanding. It pretty much wiped away any bitterness or anger I had initially.

The next time we ate from there was actually take out. I called and placed the order and I told her I wanted a large order of the Salted Fish Fried Rice. The lady on the phone laughed and asked me if I was sure. I assured her I was. A month later I called and got a different person who then asked me the same question. Needless to say, I never ordered take out from them again.

Please don’t let my bickering stop you. I do enjoy their food though. Every time we got there to eat now I instantly reject their boring menu in favor of the traditional one. Sometimes I get funny looks, and sometimes I don’t. If you do decide to eat here please just ask for the “other” menu as you will not be sorry. The food is wonderful.
